Go Ahead and Show Off Those Pictures

Your shoot is done, you've ooh'd and aah'd over the proofs and all your friends and family have raved about the images. Now comes the hard part - placing that order! You also have to figure out the best place in your home to display them right? So you're thinking an 8x10 of your favorite image to go over the couch but did you know an 8x10 is meant to sit on a desk and NOT go on the wall? Why? Well, easy! An 8x10 gets lost and the ooh and aah factor from your friends and family you're hoping for, it just isn't going to happen. Let me show you what I mean.

Not much of an impact there is there? So what would give you the WOW factor while keeping decorating costs down? BIG wall collages. Take a look.

"But Tina, the mister of the house is NOT going to like the idea of dragging out the level to conform to my OCDness. Won't an 11x14 work instead?" I hear that alot and an 11x14 might look ok if you're putting it over a love seat.

You know though, even bigger would look better. ;)

Well all except little Macey of course! Ian has somehow managed to get into middle school! I think I blinked because he really doesn't seem old enough yet! Larissa is "big man on campus" now at the elementary school starting 5th grade. Keidan is thrilled he finally gets to go to school all day now in the 1st grade. Even little Faith is starting school in pre-K! Man I feel old; on the plus side I now have time to do things like update my blog......lol

We celebrate life through complimentary portrait sessions for breast cancer patients, and we support the cause by partnering with the Eric R. Beverly Family Foundation.

This is an organization I applied to months ago and was finally accepted to just this week. We all know someone who has been affected by breast cancer in some way. By becoming a photographer with this organization, at least I can feel I am helping in some way. Even if you are not a breast cancer survivor you can still book your session with me through this website. They will then receive a $30 donation that's 75% of your session fee to help fund a cure for breast cancer.

Sometimes children are born ill or they develop life threatening illnesses throughout their childhood. The Littlest Heroes Project was created just for them. I always have a hundred ideas floating around in my head of shots I want to take, props I want to get and things I want to try. The problem is I have kids who need to eat so I must hold back my prop addiction or I run out of clients...lol These are shots I've wanted to take so long but need just the right baby to experiment on. Lucky for me Lyla's mom was up for anything and just let me play! Little Lyla was a willing model and didn't cry at me once. That itch of mine just wasn't going anywhere until I got my camera on a baby the right size.....lol

I have literally THOUSANDS of photos to process and when I started to feel like my eyes were going to fall out of my head, I took a break. Breaks for me on work days still seem to be photography related....lol I picked up this hanging planter after meeting with some clients Monday morning at Big Lots and just couldn't bring myself to wait for a smaller baby to try it out on. I've seen so many people use planters lately I decided to try too! :) Macey is slightly too big but she worked great as a tester before I do this to a client....... The best part - I got the planter for a whopping $5 then wrapped the peat moss insert in a curtain sheer panel that I got for another $5 - WOOHOO!
I have told you I'm addict to props......lol I picked up a few others too but have yet to try them out. ;)

And now my friends, I'm going to get back to those THOUSANDS of pictures waiting for me............

After coming home to download and eat something it was almost time to head to Julie & David's wedding down the Colorado History Museum!

I have known April most of my life. Since the 6th in fact when my family and I moved to Northglenn, CO. We attended middle school together, had countless sleepovers and giggles about boys when we were younger. We went to different high schools but were still able to stay in tough through mutual friends. After graduation however we lost touch until I joined the world of Facebook and we were able to reconnect. When she needed new photos for portfolio, I was thrilled she chose me! I had so much fun with her her shoot. A little fitness based and a little Sport Illustrated inspired for fun! :)

Ahhhhhhhh, Florida - I miss it already!

After three weeks of sessions back to back and processing until I thought my eyes were going to fall out; it was time for a much needed vacation! Even better Dave (my wonderful husband) and I were able to escape with NO KIDS! When you have five kids, that's a miracle! I didn't photograph a whole lot while I was there, after all, I was on vacation but we did some awesome beach hopping. Traveling as far North as Cocoa Beach and as far South as Long Key (in the Florida Keys). We took a detour through the corner of The Everglades and hit one beach on the Gulf side, Clearwater. Our oldest daughter flew out with us and stayed with a friend for the week and we were able to spend a whole day at Clearwater visiting with friends we've missed while being knocked over time and time again by the waves.....lol Now it's back to work and all that's left is the peeling tan and of course the photos to last us until the next time Aunt Phyllis makes the drive out from Utah to stay with all the munchkins.

Hannah and I have been best friends since the 7th grade. We won't count how many years that is exactly we'll just round it off to around 15 years........lol Hannah is an athlete to the max, ski racing for the US Disabled Ski Team, Biking in the mountains and recently climbing to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. She has a few Olympics under her belt and seems to be always globe trotting. When she needed new photos for her sponsor's of course I agreed! You'd never know by looking at these it was over 80 degrees out in the Colorado sun. We had a small window in between tornado warnings and we jumped on it. Originally we were supposed to go to Red Rocks but apparently someone didn't check my calendar first and scheduled a concert there that night. Good thing the town of Morrison has some neat buildings and pathways that made a great substitute!

I have another confession to make! I wrote before about being addicted to props right? Well, I ordered this tiny tutu months ago for a newborn baby shoot that's scheduled for the beginning of August but I really wanted to shoot it sooner. So while in the store picking up a diaper cover for Keegan's session there was a mom in line ahead of me with the cutest, tiniest little 9 month old girl ever. What's a girl to do? Be the crazy lady and ask if I can offer mom a free session of course! Now I've done this a few times but really everyone thinks I'm the crazy lady and never calls. Luckily this mom took me up on my offer. She got a free session, Trinity's Tutus got an adorable little model and I had a blast! It's a win-win don't you think?

I was lucky enough to take Bri's Senior Portraits on Tuesday. We did her entire session in a steady stream of drizzle! She didn't complain once! The umbrellas not only kept us dry but they made for some great props for her session!

Pete is a former student of my husband's. A very sweet kid, one that has become quite the young man. When I first met Pete, he was a quite, shy, lanky 9th grader. One that I had to run around town collecting donations for the homecoming float. He is now a young man who cares for his mother, will be attending CU on a full scholarship and is going to be an amazing asset to the political front once he has his degree! Congratulations Pete!

I love props! I am addicted and they are taking over my house, much to the displeasure of my husband and my kids well the older ones could care less. Now the younger ones, they just can't wait to try them out. I found this at a yard sale for $10 and can't wait to try it out on next weeks 8 month old! I figure I'll cover it for girls and leave it as it is for boys.... These are just some snapshots from my kitchen.

Saturday was a crazy day, getting Ian and Rissi off to a birthday party, celebrating Easter with my in laws and in between, running Faith to a local park so she could model the best tutu ever! No seriously the best tutu ever! In fact she may be featured on The View this week - not Faith but Leslie, owner and designer for Trinity's Tutus! I'm so excited for her! I approached her to see if she wanted to do a photography trade, she sends a tutu - my girls model it and she gets pro pics for her site - luckily she agreed and wow I still can't believe this tutu. I told her I was in a bright colors phase and to surprise me on what she sends. This tutu held up through Faith running, jumping, playing in the grass, hopping across bridges, chasing geese and feeding goldfish and still looks brand new - not only are the colors fantastic but it is really well made. I have wonderful and dear friend who makes the greatest photography items for a reasonable price. Camera strap covers, cocoons and so much more. Her young daughter has recently been diagnosed with a rare benign brain tumor. The good news is it is benign, that bad news is it causes little Mattie to have horrible seizures. Several a day if her medications aren't working properly. She will need to have surgery to have it removed. Unfortunately her family does not have health insurance at this time and medicaid is dragging their feet. Her mom, my friend, will be using the proceeds from her sales to help with medical expenses for little Mattie and her older disabled brother. Take a look at her site - you won't be disappointed!

I was lucky enough to be hired to photograph A Busy Child Daycare & Preschool and had a wonderful time! I have to tell you, if you are looking for childcare in the area of Peoria and 51st - this place is fantastic! A wonderful woman by the name of Babette owns and operates the center, she also has an equally sweet assistant who is there with her. Often times I photograph a home care center that provides a few preschool activities, but this place truly is a preschool complete with a full classroom and happy healthy children! I know I haven't updated my blog in a while but, I've been working on a project with my kids. Well, with five of them, you can never do all their portraits in the same day and honestly not even in the same week. Someone always has a runny nose, a bad day or is really crabby. So after two weeks and lots of bribes, here they are!

These two were such troopers. I'm afraid we didn't get any photos of both of them sleeping but we sure did get some cute ones! I don't know how mom and dad do it. We'd get one to sleep and the other would wake right up. For tiny newborns taking over the house though, they sure were in great spirits. Even the family furry friend was able to get in on the action.........

I could tell mom and dad weren't used to a photographer that didn't make them say cheese, but as you can tell, my dry sense of humor kept them smiling anyway! =D

I've decided only 3 engagement sessions in 6 months just isn't enough and I'm feeling the itch to do another one.

This is the perfect time of year with the wedding season almost upon us and many people would love to see a recent photo of you and your fiance included with their wedding invitation.

Indoor studio style would be fun with some creative posing. I'll also be Downtown Sunday and I'll keep an eye out for fantastic areas we can use for outdoor shots. You of course can choose one or the other. I would like to do your free session sometime between February 17th and the end of March.

When your session takes place, I will request that you sign a model release so I can share your photos here, on my website, my blog and a few photography forums I am a part of. We photographers like to share our work. ;)

To be considered:
1. Send me a quick message on why you should be considered for the session.
2. Myself and a few of my photographer croonies will then choose one lucky couple! Please have your messages to me by 12pm MST on Monday February 16, 2009. Only messages with the completed info will be considered.
3. Please include your first name, fiance's first name, specify indoors or outdoors, date of your upcoming wedding and a blurb about being allowed to post your message in a photography forum.
4. If you do not reside in the Denver Metro Area, you must be willing to travel to the area for your session at your own expense.
5. Session cannot be redeemed for cash value.

Pictures from the Girl Scout Me and My Guy Dance

For the remainder of the school year, I am lucky enough to be the leader of my daughter's Junior Girl Scout Troop and this year the service unit went all out on the Me and My Guy Dance - Masquerade Ball style! I had the honor of being the photographer in the corner for the evening.

Now in my mind this is how things would play out: Arrive at 6:30pm to get set up and be behind my little table ready to go at 7pm when the doors opened. Since the maximum capacity for the building is 250 I figured that's about 100 girls with their guys (factor in tagalong little sisters here) and out of those 100 about 40 of those would like a memory portrait and I could sneak away in between couples to get some action shots of my husband and our two daughters bustin' a move on the dance floor.......

Fast forward to how the evening actually went: My 3 year old daughter spends so much time primping for her date with daddy and first girl scout outing ever that we finally make it to the dance at 6:55pm. I have couples lined up and ready to go before my lights are even on. Good thing they were patient. I run back and forth between my table, cash box and portable studio for the first three couples. Maggie my god-send of a unit manager quickly realizes her photographer is running around like a chicken with her head cut off and sends in the reinforcements of mom volunteers. I am busily shooting away the night and before I know it the dance will be ending in 10 minutes and my line is finally gone. I rush to the bathroom before finding a mop becomes a necessity and back to my area. One last couple then it's time to tear down. Somewhere in between the rushing, posing and snapping I was able to remove my suit jacket and roll up my sleeves; it was getting slightly warm in there.

I happen to be able to roll with the punches so how the evening actually went to how it was going to go in my head didn't bother me and it was so much fun! I am one of those people who love shooting in a fast paced environment (probably why I love weddings so much) so this was perfect for me. We were able to catch some great shots of girls with their guys, piggy back rides, dads on one knee, it was fantastic! I can't wait until the Mother/Daughter Dance in May, my own daughter ditches me anyway to dance with her friends so this will keep me busy. ;)

Calling all High School Seniors............

I need Senior Representatives for next year. Basically it would be a Senior in high school to act as a liaison and promote me as a Senior portrait photographer to their friends.

My Senior reps receive: a free session fee, 16 free wallets (up to 4 poses), $5 print credit of each person that books with me for mentioning the reps name, and a small photo book (paperback) of their photos to show their friends.

I would have to do the photos by May so they have time to show their friends before school ends this year, over the summer and the beginning of next year.

I'd like to have up to 5 Senior Representatives at 5 different area high schools. Each representative should have an outgoing personality and involved in at least one extra curricular activity, club or sport preferably school sponsored.

Now I've been lucky enough to know mom for almost 20 years now, no we're not that old - just childhood friends.....lol I've been doing baby Rex's pictures since he was only 4 days old, he has grown so much! And of course I have to do big sister Arianna's pictures too. This time we even got dad in on the action. I'll be back in 3 months.... documenting Rex's growth through his first year has been such an amazing journey and I'm already looking forward to the next session.

So I figured it out. In 17 days I took over 2500 photos! This is just since January 1st. This is going to be such a fun year! Two weeks ago I was hired to take some photos for 2 gals to give to their husbands for Christmas. They hired a make up artist (Natalie LaKamp - she's fantastic) and while Natalie would work with one, I shot the other.........

First let me start with an apology for not updating this sooner - it seems to have been just over a month since the last update!

The holidays were filled with visiting with friends and family which of course includes hundreds of photo opportunities! :)

Yes, that would be my daughter trying to "taste" daddies non-alcoholic beer. No, this is not something we condone and yes the bottle was promptly removed.....lol

Since our Christmas pictures are virtually the same as anyone else's I will leave you with this last one of my aunt and cousin. :)

Now on to customers.............

I was lucky enough to be hired to take portraits of an adorable baby girl! I did her mom's maternity photos and she liked me enough to have me back - woohoo, insert happy dance here - unfortunately the session didn't turn out quite as planned. The session itself was fantastic and for the first time ever - a newborn didn't scream at me! I'm afraid however that my CF card died on me. For all the non-photographers out there, this is the equivalent of Walgreens messing up an entire roll of film with no hope of recovery. There is no way to anticipate this, and no way of knowing prior to downloading the card. The good news is I was able to recover 31 photos. I am very disappointed at the loss of 150+ photos but I am pleased with the ones I could save! Here's some samples:

New Year's Eve was an adventure in itself! We are home-bodies, I'll admit it. We have no life....lol! I suppose that tends to happen when you have 5 kids, but I'm not complaining at all. Instead we let the kids have a party! Ian and Rissi each got to invite 2 friends over for a sleep over, board games, virgin pina coladas (sans alcohol), lots of candy, noise makers and tons of fun makes for a great pre-teen party! Here's our practice midnight at 9pm so little Faith could go to bed.

The new year has really started off with a bang! Just a few days into the New Year I photographed a 50th Wedding Anniversary complete with a vow renewal. My assistant Kim (she says I pay her to be my date) had fun playing with my back-up camera. It was her first time photographing and she did fantastic!

This is one of Kim's - wonderful DOF (depth of field) and perspective!

When your client has over 500 photos to choose from, it is nearly impossible to choose just one favorite but I can't help but love this one. B & J actually weren't posing. I happened to be walking by and saw her with her arms around him and couldn't resist. I was actually trying to catch them both visiting with a guest when another alerted them to my presence and the result, a gorgeous - unplanned portrait.

This last weekend I had a double Boudoir session with two gals at the same time. The girls hired Natalie LaKamp as their make-up artist and while one was having her make-up done, I would photograph the other. This week I am processing the photos but check back soon for a sample..............

More Twins - Just a little bigger this time!

Sunday evening was so much fun. Twice the fun actually (ok corny I know but I couldn't resist). Twins Zoe and Cruz and are absolutely adorable! 7 month old babies are fun to photograph anyway but add the twin factor, how could it possibly not be a blast? Even their little dog had to get in on the action. Poor little Cruz was a little confused and no matter how silly mom and dad were or how many noisy things we tried to entice him with, we could not get him to crack a smile. A very serious little one that night - perhaps he'll grow up to be a fantastic scientist of some sort? Now his sister on the other hand - she smiled, cooed, drooled and basically just oozed cuteness in every shot. I'm thinking an Oscar is in her future for sure!
